To honor the lives of Jared and Jayne Coones
To create an event that celebrates family and community
To raise funds for research and organizations that support cancer patients and their families
Welcome back to our 24th Year! We are looking forward to hosting another in-person event this year.
If you are new to our event, our mission is to honor the lives of Jared and Jayne. Jared was ten years old when he passed away after a lengthy, courageous battle with leukemia in 1998. My wife, Jayne was reunited with Jared in Heaven in 2006 after a difficult battle with breast cancer. We come together to honor their lives.
During the past 23 years of this event, I have been grateful for the support we have received from the Pumpkin Run community. The donations you have helped us raise support several local charities that helped my family during Jared & Jayne’s illnesses and after their passing. A portion of the money that has been donated to Children’s Mercy Hospital over the years was earmarked for nursing scholarships in Hematology and Oncology.
On Friday, June 17, 2022, we were given the opportunity to present our first two scholarships as part of the Jared Coones Endowed Nursing Scholarship in Hematology and Oncology at the Westin Crown Center. The recipients were Makenzi Lockhart (pictured on the right) and Melanie Eppens. Melanie was not able to attend the presentation. Both young ladies are currently working at CMH as Care Assistants and Technicians on the Hematology and Oncology unit. They are attending nursing school and the scholarship money will help them both obtain their nursing degrees.
The morning was even more meaningful because I was joined by my wife Annette, my son, John and my daughter, Meghan. Meghan was in town visiting from Waco, TX. On July 15, she had a baby boy! Rhett Jared Cook has joined our family and his name will help keep Jared’s legacy strong! Congratulations to Meghan and her husband, Stephen!
Thank you for ongoing love and support. I appreciate you being on this journey with me and my family.
All childhood cancers combined receive less than 4% of the National Institute of Health's budget and our children with cancer deserve to have #MoreThan4. Several Kansas City Area childhood cancer organizations have joined together in an effort to change that statistic through our "More Than 4 Run/Walk 5K Circuit"
Each organization hosts their own 5K in the Kansas City area and when you participate in ALL of the 5K's, you will receive a special 20K medal for your accomplishment and you will help increase support and funding for childhood cancers. You will be making a difference for children with cancer through your participation and you will crush 20K in the process!
Below are the participating organizations, race dates, and individual registration sites for 2022. You simply register for all of the 5K's, either in person or virtually, and you will receive your 20K medal when you cross the finish line at the final race which is the Jared Coones Memorial 5K Pumpkin Run/Walk, October 8. Medals will be mailed to virtual runners who are not present that day to receive theirs.
Join our collaborative effort and help us raise #MoreThan4 for children with cancer.
